Dreadball Final 2017 – Central Community Poisoners v Outcasts

“It’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming, Dreadball’s coming home!” Sang the Poisoners fans as they marched up Springfield Avenue to the Central Community Stadium.

Indeed, it is only fitting that the Dreadball final be held in the Galaxy’s capital (Wigan), which effectively meant the Earth Section Central franchise, Central Community Poisoners, played the final at their home ground.

Their opponents were to be the filthy Judwan, slime of the universe and all-round lycra-wearing menaces, the Outcasts, coached by Will the Beast of Nurgle (Warning! Universe crossover!)

Central Community Poisoners v The Terrorpins

After the opening game of the season, where the Poisoners ran out as comprehensive winners, coach Alan was a little less worried that his frail monkeys were going to get their heads smashed off in the return game against Paul’s Terrorpins.

With home advantage, the Zees immediately took the game to the turtles from the initial launch when Moonfall scooped up the ball and quickly jinked through the defensive line to open the scoring with a 2-point strike.

The Black Crusade

Whilst I’ve been gone from the internet, I’ve been playing a lot of Warhammer 40k Conquest, an excellent living card game from Fantasy Flight. Probably the best I’ve played and is the benchmark for all card games in my eyes.

I was going to write a few strategy guides, but that’s been done all over the web, and then Games Workshop pulled the intellectual property licenses from beneath Fantasy Flight’s feet, meaning all FF games in GW universes are ceasing from 28th Feb 2017.

Dreadball – The Trontek Cup

Season 2016/17 of the WADDA Championship began with the Trontek Cup, an MVP-free competition that was a (re)-learning of the game for the coaches.

Barry’s Mandigester United narrowly beat Ste’s as yet unnamed Teratons by a single point. The game was marred by the death of Phil Nobble, and afterwards, United coach Barry brought a tear to everyone’s eye in the press conference with a poignant tribute to his fallen player:

“Phil was a dynamo in the team’s heart” said Barry, “the driving force behind our victory today. Unfortunately we haven’t earned enough revenue to revive him, so he is now the post-match buffet on the coach home. It’s what he would have wanted”.

Blue Aggro

Theros is such a fast format that you can quite easily incorporate Blue into an aggro deck (my favourite kind), and in the absence of any stand-out counter spells, the weenie flyers blue provides can be very handy.

I didn’t go into the game thinking about taking blue or red, but as the draft began and I examined my cards I had Benthic Giant and Aqueous Form right next to each other!

Benthic Giant

Mandingo Fandango v Harrysan’s Heroes

With Angry Vomit getting a thrashing at the hands of the Red Duke’s Bolt Throwers, it was vital for the Fandangos to get a result from their catch-up game against Harrysan’s Heroes.

Thanks to their protracted FA Cup run, the Fandangos had levelled up a few players giving the Heroes some inducements, including a wizard. The fans had high hopes that a lightning bolt to the groin might wake Slither Slob up and cause him to actually “get stuck in” (to utilise the parlance of the terraces).

It’s FA Cup Day!

It’s that time of the season when all bets are off and the players enter cup mode. Can the part-time butchers overcome the full-time Blood Bowl stars? That wouldn’t be decided in this particular match between Sweet Khorne and Mandingo Fandango….

Two new teams with little in the way of skills meant another match with a high turnover rate. The strength 4 of the Nurgle Warriors didn’t count for much as Sweet Khorne took full advantage of the Rotters’ Decay and killed two of them in the first few turns, running in a TD in turn 4.

More Theros

We moved away from Draft this week because Zanfus complained about it, and everyone (apart from Zanfus, who won) agreed that it was a bit of a disaster. From the pool of cards we each chose 75 cards with which to build a 40 card deck.

Without the draft mechanic in place there was no way to control the concentration of colours, nor change strategy based on the efficacy of the card synergy. What we were faced with was a pile of random cards that (unless you were lucky) did not work terribly well together unless you were prepared to construct a 3-colour deck (and sometimes, not even then).

Da Bludeed Skullz v Mandingo Fandango

Slither Slob the Beast made his debut in this game; and spent most of it either Really Stupid or dishing out girly slaps that failed to even knock over the opposition, never mind cause a casualty. The Mandingo Fandango support looked on incredulously at this new recruit’s feeble attempts at blocking and roundly booed him at the final whistle.

Fun League Season 17 is Underway!

Funleague.net have kicked off their Season 17 Blood Bowl Season and I’m trying something new with a Nurgle team, so without further ado, here is the report from week 1:

Harrysan’s Heroes 0-1 Mandingo Fandango

A new Khorne team versus a new Nurgle team meant the turnovers came thick and fast, with plenty of skulls and both-downs leaving both coaches plans in disarray.
